Term 3: Week 6 Learning

This week we welcome the Student Teacher Sophie back from AUT into our class for the next 3 Weeks. She will be working alongside me, to support the children in their learning and be taking a few different Reading, Writing and Maths groups throughout her time. Please make sure we make her feel welcome in our class.
Reminder on the 6th of September, we will be heading to Motat Museum to explore the movement of time through the History Village, Transport, and changes that have taken place.

For Maths this week in our class warm-up we will be working on Skip Counting in 5's to 100. Along with this in our Maths groups, we will be working on different addition and subtraction problems using the strategy at their level. Talk with your children about how they have been working out addition and subtraction problems. If you would like more information on their strategy please come in and ask me.

This week in Reading we will be focusing on the decoding strategy 'Skippy Frog'. This is where if the children don't know a word they will skip it and read on to help get more meaning and jump back to decode the unknown word. Along with this, we will be working on reading with fluency and expression, looking at the text for speech marks and different text layout.

Our Poem for this week is 'Finger Painting' where we will be focusing on er, rhyming, describing and sight words.
The Big Book we will be looking at this week is 'The Giant's Ice Cream'. We will be focusing on our retelling, sequencing, comprehension, repeating, rhyming and different punctuation

Term 3: Week 5 Learning

WOW, we are now into week 5 and halfway through this term already.  Just a quick reminder to make sure you are checking your emails from the school, as we send out any important information and notices about school trips through email. Please remember on Tuesday school will be closing at 12:30 and check-in meetings will be running that afternoon. If you haven't already booked in, and have some questions please make an appointment or get in contact with me. On the 6th of September, we will be heading to Motat Museum to explore the movement of time through the History Village, Transport, and changes that have taken place.

This week in Reading we will be focusing on the decoding strategy 'Chunky Monkey'. This is where the children will be looking for a chunk (-at, -an) in words or looking for a part in a word (th-, st- ed). Along with this, we are working on our comprehension and understanding of what we have read. We will be answering and asking, an open and closed question about the text that we have read. Work on this with your children at home.

Our Poem for this week is 'Grandpa' where we will be focusing on gr, rhyming and sight words.
The Big Book we will be looking at this week is 'Ratty Tatty'. We will be focusing on our understanding, comprehension, rhyming and decoding skills

Term 3: Week 4 Learning

This Week at school is MATHS WEEK so we will be spending lots of time doing different things in Maths. We will be exploring some new games, trying something different and having fun. As a school our main focus for Maths Week is Estimate. We will be working on Estimation within our VLC Team and having surprise guests.

For Writing over the last few weeks we have been working on Narratives. We have unpacked what a Narrative is, and talking about what is important in a narrative piece of writing; Characters, Setting, Problems, and Solutions. This week we are going to be focusing on the introductions of a Narrative piece, hooking the audience into wanting to read their story. We will talk about different story starters they might want to use for a narrative, WOW words, and description.

This week in Reading we are working on Stretchy Snake, where the students will stretch the word out slowly and put the sounds together to help decode unknown words. This is just a different strategy they could use, but don't forget about the other once we have already learned as well. A tricky thing for children to develop is to know which strategies they should use and when. Help support your child with this when reading by not telling them the word but hinting to them which strategy they might want to use.

Reminder:
  • Wednesday: Library
  • Monday, Wednesday, Friday: Cross Country Practice

Week 3: Our VLC Trip

WOW, what an amazing VLC trip we had. All the students were on their best behaviour and you should be very proud of them. The children loved seeing what was happening in the areas around them and seeing the movement that is happening.  We talked about population growth in the area, housing and changes that are going on. It was great seeing the children putting the connections together from what we had been talking about in class to what they could see.
We also got some time to explore some Colonial Games, Go on a Treasure Hunt and Sketch the Couldrey House.

Term 3: Week 3 Learning

This week on Monday, we head out on a bus for our school trip to explore the movement that has happened around this area. We will be looking into the different developments that are going on, the movement of people, housing and how it is changing. We will be looking at the Pioneer Village and Cauldery House while we are out on our road trip. Thanks to the Parents that are coming along to help.

This week in reading we will be focusing on 'Lips the Fish'. This is where, if the children get stuck they will be looking at the beginning sounds of the unknown word and reading on to the end of the sentence to help them. Along with this, we are also focusing on understanding what they are reading. When reading with your child talk to them about what is happening in the story and ask them some questions about what they have just read. This can be done with the reader they bring home, book before bed etc.  Make sure you make it fun.

In Writing, we will be reading the book 'The Day the Crayons Quit'. From this book, we will be writing our own Narrative of what the Colour Crayon of their choice got up to when it had quit. We will be talking about Characters they could use in their story, Settings where it could take place, and what problems and solutions that they could choose.

In Maths we are continuing exploring into Factions, finding a half and quarter of an object.  Along with this, we are working on skip counting in 2's, 5's and 10's. Also on Friday, we will be touching base back on time. We will be working on reading a clock that shows O'Clock.
