Week 2: Please remember if you are wanting to come on our VLC Trip as a parent helper, we need to know ASAP as we will be sorting out parent helpers and groups for the trip. Thanks
In Writing this term we are going to be working or Narrative Writing. Where the children will be exploring the structure and layout of a Narrative piece of writing, Beginning, Middle and End, Problems and Solutions, Characters, Setting and lots more. We will be reading a range of different Narrative Books to help their creative minds explore and working on unpacking the story and message of the book.
In Reading this term we will be revisiting the different strategies to work out an unknown word. We will be focusing on at least 1 of these each week. Remember, in the children's Communication Books there is this sheet to support you with your child's reading, for unpacking unknown words and also props for reading. Talk with your child about what we have been focusing on each week. This week we will be working on Eagle Eyes; Looking at the pictures for clues to support their reading and decoding of unknown words.
In Maths this week we are working on Factions, finding a half and quarter of an object. For the more able mathematics, we will introduce thirds. This is a great opportunity for you to work with your child at home. It can be as easy as when you are serving up dinner, how much each child is getting.

The children had a wonderful time at our Teddy Bear Picnic on Wednesday. They enjoyed getting to know the other year 1 children, sharing their teddies with others and getting outside with their new friend to have a play on the playground. They all had a smile on their faces and showed the Whangaparaoa ORCA Values.
Welcome back to a big, fun and exciting term. This term for our Inquiry is Movement of Time, where we will be inquiring into our place and time; personal histories; home and journeys. From the children's interest, we will be exploring homes, moving and migration. We have planned a VLC Trip in Week 3, where the children will be exploring the changes that have happened around the Hibiscus Coast and Silverdale Area. We will be exploring this on a Bus with a range of different stops around the area. We also hope to take walks around the neighbourhood to gather information about homes, building and changes that have happened.

If you have, or can get your hands on some materials like planks/pieces of treated wood, pallets (Cut up Please), spare nails etc the kids could use to create a building project on our classroom carpentry table please bring them on in. If you would like to come in and help with building with the kids please let me know as it would be greatly appreciated.
Also over the holidays, I have been busy with my family making a frame of a house which the children will be working on throughout the term. (I will bring this in, in week 2).
This week we will be celebrating being at school for 100 days this year. We will be incorporating this into our Writing, Reading and Maths. For Writing, we will be writing our own Poem about 'On the 1st day of school, I could.......... On the 50th day of school, I could........ On the 100th day of school, I can.....) This is a great chance for the children to see the progress that they have made over the year so far and reflect on their successes. We will be displaying this work around the room. We will be working with numbers to 100 and counting to 100 each day.
In Maths for our Strand this term we will be exploring Time; Telling the Time, am, pm, O'clock and Half Past, parts of the clock, putting time into order and time line. We will also be looking at Transformation; reflection, rotations, translation.

Year 1's Teddy Bear Picnic on Wednesday; Please Bring your Teddy into class on this Day
This week in Writing we are working on retelling a story
they have heard. On Monday I will read them the story 'The Magic Hat'. They
will need to retell the story in their own words with detail and in order,
seeing if they could change one thing in the story. This is great for their oral
language skills, understanding and creative thinking. We will be publishing
these stories and putting them up in the class with some art to go with
it.
For Maths we are going to be working with B3 and B4, focusing on our Strand Measurement and also touching base on Probability. We will be working in mixed ability groups and taking the opportunity of getting outside, and for the children to talk about what they are doing with each other.
In reading, we will be working on retelling. This will link in with our writing and comprehension. Along with this, we will be revisiting the Big Books that we have read this term and talking about what we looked at in them.
Some of these areas are
Exploring Language: The language that they have used in the book
Thinking Critically: Questions about the book and the story
Vocabulary: The text that they have used
Punctuation: Capital Letters, Question Marks, Exclamation Marks, Commas, Speech Marks
Visual Information: Unpacking the pictures and what's on the pages
