Week 9: Learning

This week in writing, we are going to continue looking at 'what a good writer does'.  But will be getting the students to go back to their writing the next day to fix it up and fancy it up. When they go back to their writing, they are checking if it makes sense and if their story is in order. When they fancy it up, they are seeing if there are interesting or fancy words, they can add or if they can add a sentence.

In reading, the children will be continuing using the different decoding strategies. Make sure you have a look at your child's communication book, to see what strategy we have been working on.  Along with this, we will be working on understanding the main ideas and details in a story. We will be using these to help us unpack the book. This is also in their communication books.

Our learning will continue with the child working on addition and subtraction. When solving problems we are using materials, to help figure them out. Along with this, we are beginning to learn, to skip count in 10's to 100 and understanding the place value of these numbers.

Week 8: Pirate Week

We have had so much fun being Pirates throughout the week and incorporating it into our learning. Here are a few things we did. We wrote about pirates and talked about being an author. We then did our writing into a book. Come into class and have a look at it.  We also went on a Pirate Treasure Hunt, which involved our maths. We got to be creative and made a pirate ship and did lots more.

With our Poem, we unpacked the ck words, talk to your children about them.

Week 8: Learning

Ahoy, me Hearties! All Hands on Deck!

This week in B3 we are having Pirate Week. This is where we will be bringing our learning alive as a Pirate. We will be incorporating it into all learning areas.  As a class, we will be learning a Pirate Poem, related to our letter and words of the week.

We will bring it into our written language and write about 'If I was a Pirate....'  applying what we have been working on over the last few weeks
A= Capital Letters (Green for GO)
. = Full Stop (Red for STOP)
R = Re-reading our writing
? = Does it make sense
! = Interesting Sentence
Talk to your children about these symbols and get them to explain them to you.

We will have lots of fun as a Pirate in Maths. We will be unpacking the maths language around additions and what it means. It is very important that the children get the maths language and the understanding of what different problems mean.

Also in Maths, we will be continuing with the strand Geometry: Position and Orientation. Where we will give the students a Pirate Map of different instructions and movements to follow, to find the Pirate Treasure.
Your child may come home talking like a Pirate

Arrgh! See Ya!

Week 7: Maths

This week the kids have been enjoying counting forwards and backwards to 20 and getting to know grouping with numbers to 10. On Thursday we took the opportunity of getting outside in the lovely sunshine and applying what we have learnt with a buddy on the concrete. The kids loved it and amazed me with what they could do. Well done the Amazing B3 Kids.

Week 7: Learning

Wow, we are into Week 7. This week in Reading we are going to focus on the children identifying words, they know thought out there reading and sounding out the unknown words. We will still continue reinforcing 1 to 1 pointing, using pictures to help decode the unknown word and having fun when reading. Please keep these in mind when you are reading with your child at home.

Writing this week is going to have lots of fun. On Monday afternoon we are making popcorn. We will talk about what is looks like, sounds like, smells like, feels like and taste like. We will then be using that to write about for the week. Giving the students an experience which relates to their senses can help hook them into writing.  Further that we will continue talking about what a 'Good Writer is'.

In maths this week we are continuing counting forwards and backwards to 20, ordering numbers and groups with numbers to 10 (3 + 2 =, 6 + 4 =). Along with this, we will be singing the teen song. This is a song to help the kids identify and know a teen number. We find a lot of us get this mixed up.

With our Inquiry, we have been finding out the answers to the questions we decided on. We were very interested with some of the answers. This week we are deciding how we would like to take this further. We are going to decide on a personal or group goal. We would like to achieve in the school community. It may be going to the library with a friend at lunchtime,  getting a ball out of the PE shed at lunchtime.

Week 6: Planning, Creating and Reflecting

Throughout the week we had been reading a poem about a bus and its wheels, axels and how it goes up and down the ramps. On Friday Baylee set us the task of constructing a ramp. It had to go from the chair to the ground, and our car had to be able to roll down. We got given the card, paper, stapler, and sellotape to create these with. We had so much fun planning, creating and reflecting on our ramps and we all worked together. We took it even further and made a car track for our cars as well.

Week 5-6 Skipping

Throughout last week we grabbed the opportunity of getting outside with B7 from our learning group. This was where B7 took on the opportunity of being the teachers and teaching B3 how to skip. The kids all loved it and had a great time. That was incredible how quickly some of them was able to learn how to skip. The task was to get the B3 child to skip 10 times. Once they had achieved that task, they had to make up their own game involving a skipping rope.

Week 6: Learning

Every morning we do Calendar Maths. This involves the students learning the Date, Days of the Week, which includes us talking about tomorrow will be and yesterday was. We learn the Months and the different seasons in a year. We are counting each day we are at school, and this brings in place value, 1's, 10's, and 100's. Get your child to show and talk to you about this in class.

This week we are starting on the strand Geometry: Position and Orientation. We will be working on this for the next few weeks where the students will be discussing placement of objects, following instructions for movement, distance (Steps), turns, forwards, backwards and sideways. We will be using this opportunity to working outside and incorporating this into our inquiry. Further that we are focusing on counting forwards and backwards to 20, ordering numbers and groups with numbers to 10 (3 + 2 =, 6 + 4 =).

Writing this week we are going to have lots of fun. We have read and looked into the book 'Where the Wild Thing's are'. The class loves this book and exploring where Max goes. I have taken this opportunity to bring it into our writing for the week. On Friday we started to plan out our own 'Wild Thing'. Throughout the week we will be finishing them off and writing our description about our wild thing. We will be talking about interesting words to make our sentence more descriptive. Along with what we have already learned
  • Using words we know
  • Finger Space
  • Re-reading our sentence when writing
  • Capital Letters (Green for Go)
  • Full Stop (Red for Stop)
Reminders:
  • Swimming Wednesday and Friday
  • Library Wednesday: Bring back your books
  • Mufti Day Friday

Week 5: Inquiry

Today we talked about what we would like to find out about the school. We came up with some very interesting things.....
  • When is the Library open at lunchtime?
  • How many books am I allowed to get out from the Library?
  • Am I allowed to get a Bike out at Lunchtime?
  • Where does Baylee get the Poems from?
  • Who made the Bike Track?
  • Did Troy and Kevin build the Bike Track?
  • How did the school get so BIG?
  • How did the classrooms get built?
  • Who keeps the school pool clean?
We also talked about who we could ask about these questions. Next week we will be trying to find out some of these questions.

Look at all our THINKING FACES
